I’m celebrating a couple of anniversaries – it’s two years since I embarked on my new life as a consultant, and a year since I established my company Amplify Science.
It’s been fantastic working with such a variety of health and science charities, helping them articulate their ambitions and grow their impact.
When I started out I wrote a post describing the kind of work I wanted to do.
The plan was to support health and science charities with smart strategies and strong storytelling… ideally by operating at the sweet spot where the two come together.
And here’s my mark sheet… a quick audit of my work so far:
· 5 strategy projects – helping charities engage with their communities and create inspiring research or organisational strategies
· 4 strategic reviews – assessing charity activities against strategy and advising on how to increase impact
· 4 case for support projects (and 14 individual cases for support) – helping charities tell donors a compelling story about their ambitions.
I feel it’s gone pretty well, and I’ve been lucky enough to find a niche. I’ve also got a clearer idea of what I don’t do. I’m not doing media relations consultancy for example, much as I’ve loved working in and around the media for a good part of my career. There are already great people out there doing that in the world of science… Kerry Noble, Claire Bithell and Ruth Francis to name a few.
That’s my number one tip for any budding consultants out there… know what your offer is, and what it isn’t.
It just remains to say a heartfelt thanks to everyone I’ve worked with over the last two years. It’s been great fun, I’ve learnt a lot, and hopefully I’ve helped a bit too.
